Sound & Story Consultant

From the moment I started writing and producing radio news, I felt something uncanny in my bones. It was a calling — a deep satisfaction and thrill that came from crafting layered, sound-rich stories for listeners. I was hooked. I still am.

In the Beginning, There Was Radio

I learned how to tell stories with sound in the public radio newsrooms of KQED, WDET-FM, and Minnesota Public Radio.

I have also reported for — and/or provided production assistance to — broadcast and media networks and programs including the BBC, National Public Radio, Chicago Public Radio, Georgia Public Broadcasting, Blue Moon Productions, America Abroad, On the Media, The World, Marketplace, Radiolab, This American Life, and Us & Them.

In the Field & In the Studio

As a journalist and radio producer, I’ve covered a diverse range of beats and issues — from farming to education, from healthcare to city hall.

For me, it’s all about opening up and tuning in to people and their stories.

My award-winning audio documentaries portray the unseen worlds of families navigating and overcoming barriers — whether they’re embracing a genetic condition or building a new life in another country.

An earlier documentary for WDET-FM focused on refugees in Detroit. I traveled overseas to share their recorded greetings with relatives, and I taped the replies. These families connected through the intimacy of audio. By hearing each other’s voices, joys and struggles, they bridged the distance created by time and war.

Over the years, I’ve had the pleasure of collaborating on exciting projects.

With MN90, I produced radio spots designed to breathe life into the histories of Minnesotans and the places and things they've built. And, working with the public radio program, Us & Them, our team explored America’s culture wars, including how the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the country’s individuals, communities and institutions.

I also have a passion for writing news and feature stories about communities, culture, and wellness. In print, I’ve covered these topics and more, including infrastructure, business, and public policy. My articles have been published by Reuters, Star Tribune, MinnPost, Finance & Commerce, Forum Communications, Minnesota Lawyer, and Minnesota Cities magazine.
